In the 4810 edition, the back and corpus are made of black grenadilla, a luxurious hardwood from the southern hemisphere. The inlay, clip and bindings are reproduced in sterling 925 silver evoking the art of the Indians whose Humboldt culture studied during his expedition to South America.

The 18-karat gold pen is platinum-plated and bears a fine engraving of a sextant, one of Humboldt's favorite instruments that has helped his research and surveys around the world on his discovery journeys.
