Hadrien was one of the most powerful and respected leaders in history. His reign registered him among the "five good emperors", a period considered by historians as the happiest of antiquity.

From 117 AD, Hadrien reigned for 21 years on an empire extending to three continents. The barrel, made of matte Egyptian basalt, presents a delicate hand carved by hand. It is believed that these magnificent birds, considered as symbols of immortality, were once part of the original decoration of the Hadrian mausoleum.
