Louis II (August 25, 1845 - June 13, 1886), nicknamed King Swan or the King of fairy tales, was King of Bavaria from 1864 until his death in 1886. He gave shape to his penchant for castles extravagant by building three architectural masterpieces: Linderhof, Herrenchiemsee and Neuschwanstein, a fairytale interpretation of the medieval fortress. He made the swan, symbol of the legend of Lohengrin, his royal emblem. This motif is immortalized in the various castles of Louis II.
